As reported on Twitter by The Associated Press:

Publicist Kristen Foster says singer Whitney Houston has died at age 48.

Very sad- the week her first single was released I read an article predicting big things for her. Author was correct.

I think it was reported a few weeks ago she was trying to make a comeback of some sort (movie or concert). And that she had somehow managed to spend about $100 million...

Hard to say that someone who accomplished so much could've wasted so much of their talent, but I agree 100%. I'd say the same for Michael Jackson in a lot of ways.

One of my all-time favorites.

I bought a CD of her version of the National Anthem from the Super Bowl. When I had influence over the music of the shows I announced I'd have the music guy use it.

I echo Mask's sentiments. So very sad on so many levels.

I echo the same sentiments. Mask, what did you think of her as an actress? I thought she was pretty good with Kevin Costner.

I think most of us have just about been expecting this for the past dozen years or so. We know she had a bad crack/powder coke habit but it was difficult to tell just how big the problem was. I guess her output over the past decade or so (or lack of it) probably answered that one for us.

Yeah she seemed like a natural there too, but as a singer, no question. And she just threw it away.

I don't know how to post something from You Tube here but there is a incredible version of Whitney sing "Didn't We Almost Have It All". It's a live performance, she's wearing jeans, a leather jacket and leather gloves. Just a jaw dropping version of the song, she changes the phrasing and it's absolute brilliance. I wish I knew how to post it here. If anyone can post it here, please do.

People in the 90s compared Mariah Carey to her a lot. While I think Mariah Carey is a very good singer, I thought Whitney at her best was better.

Whitney had ten times the talent and before she went nuts much better musical taste, BUT... Mariah has work ethic.

RIP Whitney. She started off as a 17 year old young singer with good looks in NY, and unfortunately that scene provided a lot of temptations and urges that were learned early on. She then moved on to Bobby Brown, and they basically enabled each other, until their divorce. It seems he may have gotten over the drug hump but it doesn't look like she did. Like so many others, even if you aren't doing drugs anymore, it may catch up with you down the line. RIP to her and prayers for Bobbi Kristina and her family.

Yep. EVERY guy I knew had a massive crush on her back then. I think that was around my sophomore year in high school. Just a phenomenal talent and beauty. So sad.

Carey had (and I guess, has) an incredible range; Whitney had maybe not quite what she had in that regard, but she had power and clarity and a natural talent for phrasing and so many more things that makes Carey -- a very good singer, don't ever doubt it -- somehow lacking in all comaprisons.

Very sad. But in many ways not so terribly surprising. I too echo CM's comments.

Before she became a big star, she sang "Memories" (a Hugh Hopper/Soft Machine song) on an album by Material called "One Down." And Archie Shepp played saxophone on that track too. Much more of an underground thing, and then like two years later, she was the biggest pop star in the world.

In some ways, maybe it would have been better if she'd stayed out of the mainstream pop scene and continued on with bands like Material. She'd have made a lot less money, but considering the fact that she squandered it all anyway, that probably doesn't matter. Plus, she would have been around better musicians and could have used her talent on less lightweight material. And of course if she hadn't reached the level of success that she had, maybe she might not have run into all the issues that ended up being her downfall.

Nothing but sad, the toll that drugs and madness took on Whitney Houston. Doubly sad that this long, slow death took place right in front of our eyes and that finally there was nothing that could save her.

RIP Whitney Houston

There's video of her peforming overseas somewhere a year or two ago. It was really bad. As Rick James once said, "Cocaine is a hell of a drug." Whitney never got clean and never got stopped everything. She never seemed to stop drinking.

If it was 1992 when Whitney had a carefully crafted and protected image as the nice virgin girl down the street, I'd be in shock. Since it's 2012 and her lifestyle was well known, I sadly can't say I'm shocked at all.

There's always such an awful price paid for success.

In the article I referred to in the OP - before anyone had heard of Whitney- it described how her mother wouldn't let her go outside as a child. She needed to be as light-skinned as possible and any knee scrapes would prevent her from having perfect legs.

Thus I saw her as a tragic figure from Day One.

Not a total surprise....but yet a tragic, sad loss.

She had a wonderfully beautiful voice. Cant say I liked all her music, but I did like most I heard.

Always disturbing and disconcerning to hear of a death of a talent such as Whitney Houston.

May you rest in peace now, Whitney.
