XPW Matches Part One: Going through and reviewing either some interesting matches, or matches I never knew took place in XPW.

I really got a kick out of XPW, more for the non-wrestling stuff than the in-ring product. Since they ran so few live shows, they would chop up the live event and would only air maybe one match on their TV, and pad the rest out with the backstage stuff.

Except their backstage stuff was a lot more fun than the nonsense seen on WWF, WCW or TNA. It actually felt a lot more like what Lucha Underground is doing today with the backstage segments feeling like a tele novella or soap opera, with real continuing storylines. Sometimes when they were having problems actually holding events, they might go two straight weeks without even airing a match, and it was still fun to watch. This was especially true when Rob Black was trying to set up the exploding cage match between Atsushi Onita and Sabu (that never happened).

I was disappointed when the started their attempted rivalry with ECW, and especially when they moved to the East Coast and actually ran shows from the ECW Arena. That basically killed the promotion (well, that and I think Rob Black went to prison over some obscenity charge relating to his porn business).

As much as people like to run XPW down, I think they were ahead of their time in some ways that a lot of people didn't quite catch onto. They effectively set the table for a weekly wrestling soap opera, where wrestling was just the "world" the show took place in, rather than the backstage skits just being filler between matches.

I bought a used copy of XPW Volume 1 box set, seven or eight years ago from a record store that I haven't watched.

Is it worth checking out?
I know nothing about the promotion besides what I've read through the years on here & other message boards.
How long was this company around for? Date of first show until their last?

Just looking at the box it seemed a lot of ECW guys worked for them....Did any of them jump while ECW was still in business, 'a'la 'Lex Luger/Rick Rude being on Raw one week & Nitro the next ,without warning '?

I also read that Abdullah The Butcher appears on one or more of the shows....Actually seeing him listed on the credits was the reason I bought the set in the first place....which shows that he is still a draw. At least he still is with me. ;-)

I think the initial series of tapes pre-dated the XPW TV, so they were just matches, and none of the matches were very good. Damien Steele was their "big guy", along with Big Dick Dudley as the main "name". Rob Black was always bringing in ECW guys when they weren't with the company (or maybe of they were booking their own gigs independently of ECW) and some talent from Mexico (mostly AAA guys who were working in IWRG). So they got Shane Douglas (who did a god-awful, career burying rant about all the old guard in WCW), Sabu, New Jack, Vic Grimes, Abdullah and Terry Funk, Psicosis, Juvy, Halloween, Damien 666, Rey Misteio (Sr), La Parka.

XPW sort of had three distinct phases...the Damien Steele era, the XPW TV era (that revolved around Supreme, Kid Kaos, Homeless Jimmy and White Trash Johnny Webb), and then the wannabe ECW stuff when they moved to the east coast. None of it was really good, a lot of it was terrible, but some of it was just on the bright side of cringe-worthy to make it watchable. But for me, XPW was never about the in-ring product.

Was XPW the promotion where New Jack threw Vic Grimes off the scaffold in an attempt to kill/maim him?

Didn't Rob Black film his girlfriend Lizzy Borden having sex in the locker room of an XPW show in Pittsburgh or something? I thought he got arrested for that.

I actually liked Big Dick Dudley. Sure he was not a great worker but he was not suppose to be. He was a monster. I wonder why they could not get Onita and Sabu in a match? Was it simply not being able to afford Onita?

I think I saw a documentary about porn and they actually had Rob Black on there at his house and at a shoot. I think part of the doc was about Gay for Pay. Going from memory but it may have been a Louis Thoreaux doc on youtube. His stuff is always good. He also did a doc about wrestling.

Wasn't one of their guys attacked outside the ring and had his thumb cut off?

If only they were still around they could had quite the invasion angle with the folks from Appalachia Pro...

The wrestler called Messiah (he was either XPW's surrogate Sandman or Tommy Dreamer) was attacked in his apartment by people who forced entry. In the process, they cut off one of his thumbs. Allegedly he had a fling with Rob Black's wife and this was retribution, but I don't think Messiah cooperated with the authorities while Black and the promotion denied everything. No one was ever arrested, let alone prosecuted.

Absolute garbage for sure.I was in Revere for the Mass Transit incident, which is the worst thing I've ever seen live.Exactly what was going on was confusing for a bit because sight lines sucked but it's still the worst thing I've seen.No surprise New Jack was involved in both these incidents of complete unprofessional conduct.

XPW was terrible. They basically took everything that was bad about ECW and nothing that was good about ECW.

You were lucky you didn't witness a murder that night, as it was, you just witnessed an attempted murder. Grimes was incredibly lucky he landed on the ropes. Another couple of feet and he'd have been a splat on the concrete at ringside.

The only other incidents I have seen that rival that one were the Mass Transit bloodbath, the time New Jack decided to attack a septegenarian Gypsy Joe, the time New Jack stabbed some indie guy a dozen times or the time New Jack broke an indie guy's skull with a chair shot.

Please tell me New Jack has retired now...

Was there any fallout for New Jack or Grimes from that awful scaffold toss? Was that thing planned beforehand? Man, seems like they way Grimes landed and the way the ropes caught him, seems like a million-to-one shot that he didn't get killed.

Rob Black was considered human trash by the porn industry, if you care to ponder that for a moment. It was said XPW was started as a way for Black to launder cash from his porn productions and when XPW actually caught in he had no idea what to do with it.

Probably the only fallout of the Vic Grimes/New Jack scaffold spot was the ridiculous Vic Grimes/Supreme mountain of tables spot.

Didn't New Jack once get "paid" from XPW in a trash bag full of porn DVDs?

I heard that story a few times - that wrestlers were 'paid' with porn DVDs or offer sexual services by some of Black's 'stars' in lieu of payment.

This documentary on the porn industry features Rob Black and his company, it seemed to me the people he employed to star in his films were all down on their luck types, there is one memorable scene where one of Black's women is explaining that she has been warned by her doctor that if she does another anal scene she could very well suffer a severe anal prolapse. She even says 'eventually I'm gonna get hurt and it's not gonna able to be fixed'. It's very uncomfortable watching. Words like sleazy and trashy don't begin to describe Black and his operation.

If you've seen the footage as many times as I have you can see they're working. Vic Grimes is pushing 400 pounds so if he didn't want to go off that scaffold he didn't have to. He literally just went front end over off the side and over a little railing that was on there and I think due to the height he misjudged his target. Since it came so close to being bad I think New Jack took credit for it and made an angle out of it.
