I've talked about him elsewhere, but he deserves a topic of his own. Claude-Eugene Rossignol-Rollin was France's first major (Greco-Roman) professional wrestling promoter. Maybe Europe's too. There were other promoters before him, but his operation was a major one. Between 1853 and 1872 he promoted wrestling events all across France - Paris, Nimes, Bordeaux, Saint-Etienne, Nantes, Marseille, Lyon, Toulouse, Chalon-sur-Saone, Limoges, Rouen, Strasbourg, La Rochelle, Clermont, Avignon, etc. It was a year-round touring promotion. He usually would go to a town, run a show or two per week there for a few weeks, and then move on to the next town. In places like Nimes and Marseille he would run shows at big open-air arenas and those shows were likely some of the earliest big professional wrestling crowds.

Rossignol-Rollin was an actor, who became a promoter in 1853 in Paris, where wrestling matches were held at Salle Montesquieu under his direction. Later in the year he established his own touring troupe. He was 32 years old at the time. What made him stand out was his natural speaking and promoting ability. He would put up large posters around town and the posters would talk about his wrestlers as these larger-than-life gladiators who were to engage in epic battles, like in the times of the ancient Greeks and Romans. He would also serve as announcer for his own shows and had the ability to really excite the crowds with the way he would talk about the wrestlers and the matches.

To give you an idea of his promotional style, here's how a Rossignol-Rollin poster hyped the upcoming matches in Lyon in 1863:
"Outragous wrestling! Life is wrestling! Wrestling is life! Fight to the limit! Win or die! No empty words! But deeds, facts! When your name is Rossignol, nobility obliges! My athletes! Models of the Creation! All beautiful like in antique times! And strong like people no longer are! Much has been said about these Herculeses and Gladiators of antiquity! They are back! The Greeks and Romans of decadence! Dear Lyon public, I have chosen the most formidable Herculeses from all over the world to present them to you, inspired by this famous line: to be conquered without peril, one triumphs without glory! The fight will end when there are no more fighters!"

Greco-Roman professional wrestling (or Roman wrestling as it was known back then in France) probably started in the 1820s, but the 1850s is when it truly began to blossom as a number of new wrestling stars emerged on the scene and Rossignol-Rollin's touring operation took off. Rossignol-Rollin's troupe of wrestlers weren't exclusive to him and worked for other promoters when they weren't working for him, but reportedly he took really good care of them - paid them well and also covered their transportation and accommodation expenses in full.

As you will see below, wrestling was the basis of Rossignol-Rollin's operation, but he also featured all sorts of other attractions too - feats of strength, boxing, fencing, cane fighting, arm wrestling, etc. Wrestlers would wrestle for money, championship belts, medals, live animals, etc. There were rivalries between wrestlers, which would result in a series of matches. One-night tournaments would often take place too. There were also open challenges to any and all-comers to take on the wrestlers from his troupe. He also made sure to give almost all of his wrestlers some sort of a catchy moniker the fans could remember them by. In short, Rossignol-Rollin's shows were more than just wrestling events. They were an athletic spectacle and that's how he sold them to the audience.

Unfortunately, results from those days are hard to come by, but here are all the Rossignol-Rollin shows I was able to find. I'm missing a ton of shows, but it is what is. Wrestlers back then were usually only known by one name and their moniker. I've listed the names as they were mentioned in the press. If you see only one match listed that means that's the only one I was able to find - there were definitely other matches on the card, but they just weren't mentioned in the press.

Some of the names mentioned in this topic:
 -
= Claude-Eugene Rossignol-Rollin, "The Tiresless Miller of La Palud" Marseille Sr., "The Giant of the Alps" Bonnet le Boeuf, "The Terrible Savoyard" Arpin, "Good-hearted" Lacroix, "The Colossus of Gironde" Pujol, "The Agile Lyonnais" Dumortier
= "The Iron Man" Vincent, "The Lion of La Palud" Marseille Jr., "The Elegant Parisian Athlete" Beranger, "The Pretty Parisian Model" Alfred, "The Carabinier of Bugey" Richoux, "The Wildcat Wrestler" Faouet, "The Coral Fisherman" Christol

--------------------------

June 5, 1853
in Nimes at Amphitheatre des Arenes

= A Rossignol-Rollin show with “Pitiless” Blas, “The Invincible Peasant” Rabasson, and Bouyard. The article mentioned Rossignol-Rollin was the director of the wrestling matches at Salle Montesquieu in Paris. The Amphitheatre is a big open-air arena, which was built around 70 CE. It still exists today and in fact WWE had shows there in 2009 and 2011. Reportedly, the Amphitheatre could fit up to 24,000 people at one point, but then the capacity got reduced. Not sure what the capacity would have been in 1853. There were wrestling matches there in 1852 too, with Rabasson as the headliner, but those weren't Rossignol-Rollin shows. The wrestling shows in 1853 started in April, but June 5 is the first mention of Rossignol-Rollin now being in charge of them.

July 17, 1853
in Nimes at Amphitheatre des Arenes

1. Rabasson vs. "The Sailor of Bordeaux" Pujol
= Also on the card: Blas, Bouyard, and Francois. Rabasson/Pujol was a rematch from the last show.

July 31, 1853
in Nimes at Amphitheatre des Arenes

= A Rossignol-Rollin show with Pujol and others. The final wrestling show of the season here.

beginning of August 1854

= Rossignol-Rollin shows have been taking place here.

January 14, 1855
in Saint-Etienne at Salle de la Rotonde Saint-Charles

1. French boxing: Blas vs. a famous professor
2. Marseille Sr. vs. Amblard
3. Anthelme Baboula vs. Blas
4. For 100 francs: "The Tireless Miller of La Palud" Marseille Sr. vs. "Pitiless" the Spaniard Blas
= The advert mentioned that this was the fifth show by Rossignol-Rollin here. The Marseille/Blas match had a special stipulation. First they were to wrestle for 40 minutes from the waist up (Greco-Roman style) and then if there was no winner they were to wrestle "lutte libre" style (freestyle). Not sure what's meant under freestyle here.

January 21, 1855

1. French boxing: Blas vs. a local man
2. Tournament with Chavassieux, Amblard, Verjus & Jean-Louis (amateurs)
3. Marseille Sr. vs. Blas

June 24, 1855
in Marseille at Cirque Courtin

1. the Spaniard Blas vs. Marseille Sr.
= Rossignol-Rollin's first show here for the season. Blas vs. Joseph Deschamps had been the advertised match and it was billed as as a teacher (Blas) vs. student (Deschamps) match, but a post-show article mentioned that Blas wrestled Marseille Sr. It's not clear whether Deschamps wrestled Blas as well. In addition to the match above Rossignol-Rollin had also announced an open challenge - 500 francs to whoever could defeat one of his two wrestlers. Seven wrestlers answered the challenge.

July 1, 1855
in Marseille at Cirque Courtin

1. "The Bull of Provence" Creste drew the Spaniard Blas (90 minutes)
= The report said there were matches with "second-rate wrestlers", and then Creste vs. Blas took place. Originally, Creste was supposed to wrestle "The Colossus of Savoy" Joseph Deschamps, but Deschamps couldn't make the show, because he was sick. The Creste/Blas match was stopped by Rossignol-Rollin after the two had wrestled for an hour and a half and there was no winner in sight. Because of this match going long the other advertised match, Marseille Sr. vs. Blas, was called off.

July 8, 1855
in Marseille at Cirque Courtin

1. Blas vs. Marseille Sr.
2. Creste vs. Joseph Deschamps

“large crowd”

1. Blas vs. Bouyard
3. Marseille Sr. vs. Joseph Deschamps
= There were also going to be amateurs on the card as well. On the same day there was a running, horse racing, gymnastics and wrestling event at the Hippodrome, under the direction of Perrin, which was headlined by Creste vs. Perdix. Creste had offered 500 francs to anyone who could defeat him and Perdix accepted the challenge.

August 5, 1855

3. “The Colossus of Vaucluse” Bonnet le Boeuf drew "The Colossus of Savoy" Joseph Deschamps (about 60 minutes)
4. Bouyard def. "The Intrepid Miller of La Palud" Marseille Sr. (about 60 minutes) - cnc
5. "Pitiless" Blas def. Bonnet le Boeuf
= Seventh show of the season. Marseille could not continue due to a shoulder injury. It's said he had dislocated that same shoulder several times before. Bouyard was billed as a student of Rabasson, one of the first French pro wrestling stars. Bonnet protested his loss to Blas since he had already wrestled an hour with Deschamps.

August 12, 1855
in Marseille at Cirque Courtin

= A Rossignol-Rollin show.

August 19, 1855
in Marseille at Cirque Courtin

= A Rossignol-Rollin show with Blas and Joseph Deschamps. According to one article the shows have always been attracting a large audience.

The Rossignol-Rollin shows in Marseille then moved to the Hippodrome in Chateau des Fleurs park, which was a big open-air race track. These were probably some of the biggest shows of the era in terms of crowds, and Rossignol-Rollin had shows there for a number of years. Usually after the wrestling matches were over there would be a big celebration/festival at the park that would feature various performances, fireworks, and a ball to end the day's festivities.

August 26, 1855
in Marseille at Hippodrome du Chateau des Fleurs
a very large audience in attendance

1. "Pitiless" Blas def. "The Bull of Provence" Creste (no more than an hour)
= Also advertised were Joseph Deschamps, Marseille Sr., Bonnet le Boeuf, and Bouyard. The Blas/Creste match was stopped at the request of Creste so technically he wasn't pinned, but was still the loser. After the match a balloon was going to be released in the air, with the name of the winner written on it. A pre-show article stated that it's very likely that about 10,000 fans would be in attendance.

September 2, 1855

3,000 fans

1. “Pitiless” Blas def. “The Bull of Provence” Creste (2 minutes)
= A balloon with the name of winner was released in the air and there were fireworks as well.
= The way the sentence in the newspaper was written seems to suggest the previous four shows here also drew 3,000 fans ("The matches between Blas and Creste have enthralled 3,000 spectators for five weeks").

September 23, 1855
in Marseille at Hippodrome du Chateau des Fleurs

= Final show here under the direction of Rossignol-Rollin with eight renowed wrestlers scheduled to compete. A pre-match article stated that a large audience is expected.

around 7 May 1856
in Paris at Salle Valentino

= The Rossignol-Rollin troupe has been performing here on Mondays and Fridays. On the cards: Creste and Marseille Sr. (the only two wrestlers known to the Paris public) and new faces such as Bonnet (who had a victory over Creste), Dumortier, Francois, Henri de Paris (who had been defeated twice by Dumortier).

In 1856 wrestling matches were held at Hippodrome du Chateau des Fleurs in Marseille starting from May 4 with Rivoire defeating two opponents on the first day. These shows were not under the direction of Rossignol-Rollin, but he did come in later and took over the promotion of wrestling at the Hippodrome. Prior to his arrival the shows were built around the rivalry between "The Iron Body" Rivoire and "The Bull of Provence" Creste. The two wrestled each other on May 12 (and that drew a great crowd, reportedly), May 18 (with a considerable crowd in attendance), May 25, June 1, and June 8. The first match was for 500 francs and was won by Rivoire, and the final match was for "the title of first wrestler in the world" and 300 francs.

On June 15 and June 22 Rossignol-Rollin promoted circus shows at Hippodrome du Chateau des Fleurs in Marseille. The featured act was Ms. Libarrere, an animal tamer (lions, tigers, bears and jaguars were to be showcased). There were no wrestling matches.

If Lacroix won his match with Marseille Sr. he was going to replace him in the match with Dumortier. Dumortier banged his head and hurt his arm in the match with Marseille Sr. and couldn't continue.

In 1859 on April 10, May 1, and May 15 (and possibly other dates too) there were wrestling shows at at Hippodrome du Chateau des Fleurs in Marseille, but those shows weren't under the direction of Rossignol-Rollin. The headline stars on those shows were Creste, Pujol, and the American Charles. It's also interesting to note that Vigneron was no longer billed as "The Human Cannon" (L'Homme Canon, in French), because back in February of the same year he and Rossignol-Rollin were sued by a man called Charles Rousselle from Lyon, who claimed to have the rights to the "Human Cannon" moniker and the court in Rouen ruled in Rousselle's favor. As a result Vigneron and Rossignol-Rollin had to pay Rousselle 300 French francs in damages.

Claude-Eugene Rossignol-Rollin passed away on January 25, 1873, in Villeurbanne, near Lyon. He was 52 years old at the time.

After he passed away several promoters began to claim they were his succesors and there was no longer one single promoter who was more powerful and influential than the others. Rossignol-Rollin's reputation remained strong even after his death. For years, decades in fact, the French newspapers would reference him and talk about what an excellent promoter he used to be.

France from what I've seen, or at least that can be verifies. That has wrestlers play up their "gimmicks" and use those while marketing the wrestlers.

I just made a small update, since I just found a newspaper from Nimes I hadn't seen before. What's significant about this update is that it confirms that Rossignol-Rollin was running shows in 1853. The French sources (newspapers and Edmond Desbonnet) always say he started in 1854, which is wrong.

Also, the shows he had in Nimes were held at a big open-air amphitheatre that was built in Roman times and still exists today. In fact, even WWE have had shows there, some 150+ years after Rossignol-Rollin had his shows at the same arena, which is kind of crazy when you think about it.

Hi Phil,

This amazing stuff to look. I'm just researching the early history of Japanese wrestling at the moment. I came across some interesting information about a French wrestler named either Hershana or Helsana (it's hard to define because of the French-Japanese-English translation) who wrestled an early "mixed" match against a sumo wrestler in 1861. The French guy was supposed to be "pretty big." I've looked through the names in your results and can't find any potential clues. I'm just wondering if you might know anything about this?

Sorry, I have no idea. I haven't come across anyone with a name like that or even close to it. Doesn't even sound like a French name to me.

Thanks, I agree on the name, it doesn't sound right. As I said the French-Japanese=English I think might have caused something to be lost, probably in the initial 19th century translation of the name from French or English to Japanese. I believe the Japanese sumo wrestler was Inazuma Raigorō. Not sure however if the guy he wrestled was actually French or an American posing as a Frenchman or even had any legitimate wrestling pedigree. I could have seen them just putting up any American, claiming he was some experienced wrestler just to give the Japanese the pop. As this was when the Americans were trying to open up trade with Japan. Because of the "French" claim, I thought I'd ask someone with more of a knowledge of this era in wrestling there. Thanks. https://assets.sutori.com/user-uploads/image/c0361021-8903-4d0b-9d93-803b266a0fff/ae20c316746636a88bea7635221b0506.jpeg

What a fascinating post, Phil. Thank you for sharing.

In my recent research, I have come across reference to a Chinese wrestler active in France around 1913. I know this is quite vague, but would happen to know of any Chinese wrestlers or champions competing in France in 1913?

There were a few Japanese wrestlers active in France in 1913 (Miyake and Iwagatami off the top of my head) and I'm guessing Sarakiki could be the guy you're referring to. He was not Japanese, but was usually presented as Japanese and also as Chinese. For example, he's billed as Chinese in this Russian postcard below:
