Most of the pollsters who argued Clinton was an overwhelming favorite based on the state-by-state poll numbers did so because of a logical fallacy.

They saw numbers saying Trump had a below-average chance in a bunch of different swing states and concluded "below average chance in state A x below average chance in state B x below average chance in state C = tiny chance of winning all three."

What they didn't realise -- and what was the reason 538 gave Trump a far higher chance than most analysts -- was that the odds in the states were correlated rather than independent. In other words, the reasons Trump did better than expected in Wisconsin also applied in Michigan and Indiana rather than being a one-off event.

Poll: Trump's approval rating erodes in Georgia
quote:
President Trump's approval rating has plummeted in Georgia, a state he won by more than 5 points in the 2016 presidential election, according to a new Atlanta Journal-Constitution poll.

According to the survey, which was conducted by the University of Georgia’s School of Public and International Affairs, only 36.7 percent of respondents in the state approve of the job Trump is doing in office, compared with 58.7 percent who do not.

That's significantly different from an earlier AJC poll in January 2017, which found Georgia voters split in their views of Trump.

Now, nearly a year into Trump's tenure at the White House, nearly 6 in 10 voters in Georgia hold an unfavorable view of the president.

And that's a pretty conservative, Republican-friendly State.

So Herr Drumpf decides we have people coming in from "shithole countries". Any number of countries might respond we are a "shithole country" for electing Trump. One thing is for sure - we ELECTED a shithole!

Democratic Rep. James Clyburn: We're pursuing censure for Trump

Censure resolutions have a much lower bar to pass through a floor vote than, say, impeachment. And can probably garner more bipartisan support.

I do appreciate Rep. Clyburn's comments here:
quote:
"I am hopeful that we will do that and get bipartisan support for it," he told CNN's Wolf Blitzer in an interview Friday. "The President is the commander in chief and this is kind of conduct that would be 'unbecoming of an officer.'"

He continued: "If a general or some other line officer in the military were to say something like this, he would be censured. It should occur here with the commander in chief at a minimum."

As a former serving member, I can tell you that any Officer who pulled that out in public would have a LOT of explaining to do to his troops and his superiors, be he a freshly-minted Acting Sub-Lieutenant or the Chief of Defense Staff.

Commanders-in-Chief, like Presidents and Crowned Heads should not be held to any lesser standard. Indeed, in order to not be found guilty of "Conduct prejudicial to good order and discipline" in the eyes of their citizens, they cannot.

Trump used salty language and said the brutal, honest truth. No sugarcoating there but if he sugarcoated it maybe so many wouldn't be in an uproar. "Oh my god! Our president used salty language". CNN is in an uproar.. There are plenty of people both conservative and liberal that have thought or said the same thing about 3rd world countries at one time or another. If they are honest they'd admit it but right now they say "I never have said or thought that".. Yeah, right!

We have no obligation or need to let in more people who desperately need to use up our resources and our hard-earned taxpayer money. It’s time for “America First.” It’s time for extreme vetting. It’s time to cut off “visa lotteries.” It’s time to let in skilled craftsman from Norway, and business owners from China, and doctors from Israel."

The real irony here is that one of the issues all these countries have is a very small upper class, no middle class and a huge lower class. You know. Exactly what tRump is trying to turn America into.

Of course Craftsman from Norway, business owners from China and Doctors from Israel have no interest in coming here to work in the food service, hospitality, elderly care industry or the food harvesting industry.

Shooter, here's to you and a long-healthy life, and at the end of it, there is a good chance that the last voice you hear will be a brown person with a foreign accent taking care of you because that is who works in the elderly care service, hopefully they treat you with far more respect than you have for any of them.

And most of the people using up government resources are redneck tRump supporters, but, as always, we know facts aren't going to influence your prejudices... or his.

Oh, my poor little confused fascisti; you really don't get it, do you?

Get a grip: Most of us remember Nixon dropping F-bombs like toast crumbs on the Watergate tapes, and those being reported in full detail by the news media in the middle 1970s, both in print and on TV (yes, they said it in prime-time as well as the after 11pm news specials that were a near-regular thing in 1973). President's using "salty language" isn't the point. And you know it, although you won't admit to it because you want to try to spin in into "snowflakes crying because Der Fueher spoke the truth".

Get over yourself: You aren't that good at spin. Someone campaigning for dog-catcher in a 2000 person village wouldn't hire you.

Let's face it, he doesn't want brown people coming here, and would prefer blonde, blue-eyed white people (can you say "Aryan", little fascisti? You should be able too, it's part of your political religion). But there's a problem with that....

quote:
From the following link...
Which is a FOX News opinion piece, which means it wasn't vetted for factual information given who the editors are over there.

But that's beside the point -- the writer says, "It’s time to let in skilled craftsman from Norway, and business owners from China, and doctors from Israel."

And that's incredibly laughable. It really is. It shows no sign of recognition about the reality of those countries.

First, Norway. Their minimum wage is way higher than the US', the have complete, universal single-payer healthcare, free post-secondary education, a longer life-expenctancy, 6 weeks paid vacation....and if they did show up in numbers in the US.....they'd be voting Democrat in huge numbers. Something tells me The Donald didn't give that point -- which is where the FOX author got the whole Norway thing -- much thought. Which isn't surprising in the slightest, given his 5-lies-a-day average since he took up residence at the White House.

Now, about those Chinese businessmen. First of all, you got to convince them to move out of Vancouver, Canada. They seem to like our climate, healthcare system, education availability and fiscal incentives for business growth. So, good luck with that. Call when you find good works, m'kay?

Israeli doctors. Grow up: Israelis are very aware of the continuing anti-Semetic lean to a lot of powerful people in the US. In business, in politics and in the streets. And given the social safety-nets in place in Israel, they, like the Norwegians, are likely laughing at the idea that they'd move to the US.

So, let's look at what that "shithole" statement of his -- which he tried to deny that he said until everyone in the room said, "oh, no, you said it all right; we all heard it." -- and just who it's annoyed.

The Haitains. The refugee Haitians are not at all happy (to say nothing of the Haitians that showed up in the US since Baby Doc took to his heels). And they are making up a huge new chunk of Florida. A large, now-looking-more-friendly-at-Democrats chunk of Florida.

The Puerto Ricans. His back-handed slap at them was heard loud and clear. And they are making up an even bigger chunk of Florida in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria...and that's another sore point with them, given that the relief response there was so lack-luster compared to any other Hurricane making landfall in the continental US (large swaths of the island still don't have electricity or clean water).

Honestly, it's like he's trying to lose Florida for the GOP. He keeps going, Florida isn't going to be a swing-state anymore. And what should be a coast to the governor's manor for the State GOP just got a whole-lot rockier.

Your allies. Canada, the UK, France, Germany -- hell, most of Europe -- pretty much the entirety of Africa (gotta love South Africa's best-known morning-news anchor, Leanne Manas' Tweet: "Good morning from the greatest most beautiful 'shithole country' in the world!!!") and the UN in general have all condemned his words, with pretty much all of them coming out and calling his statement "racist". And a few of them directly calling him racist. Frankly, it looks good on him.

Hell, even members of his own Party are looking sideways at him and whispering "racist" to their fellows.

A friend who is....involved in political action made an interesting comment WRT Herr Drumpf's comment. He noted that the US is currently bombing 8 different countries, as a $1,000,000,000+ student loan debt (yes, that's over 1 trillion dollars), have what is generally described as the worst healthcare system in the developed world, have one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the western world and it's growing (think about that for a minute), an absurdly high infant mortality rate for such a developed country, and a wealth-to-poor gap that makes some more despotic governments look generous to their people and should thus not be tossing around the term "shithole country" without looking close into the mirror.

And while it probably raised your blood-pressure up a few points, I found it refreshing when CNN's anchorman last night started off his show with, "This is CNN Tonight, I’m Don Lemon. The president of the United States is racist. A lot of us already knew that."

No spin there. Just the facts.

Enjoy it, little racist; your President just destroyed 80% of the moral advantage the US had in foreign relations. Moscow and Bejing are quite happy about that....

I bet Putin cannot believe his luck.

The efforts to destabilise the Clinton campaign, initially blew back in his face when Trump actually won, but they have played a perfect political game since.

It helps that when trying to make the POTUS look like a lunatic, that he actually is pretty much there already.

All them racist comments may play well to those who got you elected. But have no doubt that Russia and CHI-NAH are filling in the void that the US is leaving in these 'shithole' countries.

Great opinion piece in the NYT today by Bret Stephens, former editor in chief of The Jerusalem Post, Pulitzer Prize winner and neo-conservative columnist. The title of his piece?

Proud to Live in a Nation of Holers

quote:
America is a nation of holers. It is an improbable yet wildly successful experiment in the transformation — by means of hope, opportunity and ambition — of holers into doers, makers, thinkers and givers. Are you of Irish descent? Italian? Polish? Scottish? Chinese? Chances are, your ancestors did not get on a boat because life in the old country was placid and prosperous and grandpa owned a bank. With few exceptions, Americans are the dregs of the wine, the chaff of the wheat. If you don’t know this by now, it makes you the wax in the ear.

Donald Trump is the wax in the ear.

MLK's niece Alveda King denies Trump is a racist. Funny how this is reported on in a lot of websites with a headline but in the 1st few pages that pop up in google the "mainstream" liberal leaning sites that a lot here love to get their info from don't show anything in their headline that people are saying Trump is not a racist. One or two sites in the write up casually mention how Ms. King doesn't think he's racist but the headlines would lead most to believe differently...

https://www.gloria.tv/video/k7q3ceGeykkX4TGDsWFQmZQED

http://insider.foxnews.com/2018/01/13/alveda-king-donald-trump-not-racist-helping-bring-attention-minorities-martin-luther-king

CNN's headline reads "MLK nephew: Trump 'racially ignorant and racially uninformed' but what MLK's nephew Isaac Newton Farris Jr. said is...
"I don't think the President Trump is a racist in the traditional sense as we know in this country," Farris Jr. said. "I think President Trump is racially ignorant and racially uninformed. But I don't think he is a racist in the traditional sense."

http://www.cnn.com/2018/01/12/politics/isaac-newton-farris-martin-luther-king-donald-trump/index.html

I can certainly buy he is a bit uninformed on some racial matters. But he is certainly no racist as most around here have been blindly led to believe.

Donald Trump’s Racism: The Definitive List

Opinion piece, sure, but the research is pure gold. But I would expect no less from David Leonhardt (2011 Pulitzer Prize winner for his columns on economics in politics). The list goes back to the 1970s, and it's not exactly a short list. And these are only the publicly known ones.

And again, using a self-admitted entertainment channel (which FOX pulls out every time someone points out their inaccuracies and spin attempts) as a citation doesn't play for you. You have yet to grasp that simple point.

And here's another thing for you: Terms like " racially ignorant" and "racially uninformed", along with "racially loaded", "racially charged", "racially tinged", and "racially sensitive" are all "weasel words". And for someone who claims to like "telling it like it is", you shouldn't be upset when we point out that such terms just sugar-coat the racist rhetoric of others.

In this case, the the racist rhetoric of the President of the United States, Donald John Trump.

It is time that Shooter just comes out and admits that Trump...and Shooter...would be classified as hardcore racist isolationists.

Your attempt to invoke a member of the King family to prove your point is almost as cute as your attempts to invoke Fox.

This isn't the first time she's been wrong about Donnie Golden Showers being a racist piece of trash, and it probably won't be the last.

To continually deny Donnie is a racist means only a couple of things, really.

You're a racist, too. Or you're a moron.

Though I suppose in your case, it's both.

As for Scotland, have you seen some of them golf club owners? Shithole country!

Personally I am 'generally' English so can look down on all this, because we never caused any trouble.

No Blacks
No Dogs
No Irish...

Common signs in America at one point, want to rethink this position a little? One of my ancestors, who came from Ireland and was brought over to fight for the Union in exchange fora chance at a better life, and when the war was won he had two choices, work in law enforcement or work for the railroad as the anti-Irish prejudice kept him from buying property and getting a job.

Considering that I have spent a good part of the last year-and-a-half unemployed I should feel a lot more sympathy than I do. They bought Trump's garbage, not to mention that of their governor at the time (who just happens to be the current VP. Carny whips the marks once again.

See, there it is again. The beav is scots-irish so he doesn't think of Scotland or Ireland as s*** hole countries. What a shock. But then he takes that one more step to 'one' doesn't. One what? One 'you'. One white privileged, sociopathic, self-absorbed, infantile you.

And let us examine that false ballistic missile scare in Hawai'i this weekend.

The Prez was informed of the mistake. He was golfing at the time. Here was a perfect time to display a little leadership and lessen tensions of the people that he supposedly represents and leads. A perfect Tweet moment if ever there was one.

Instead, for nearly an hour, tens of thousands of people in the Islands thought they were standing on a bullseye and they and all their loved ones were going to die.

And after the alert was over and declared to be an accident, a mistake, a glitch in the system, how does The President react?

He Tweets that the media is being mean to him.

I dunno what else to tell ya, since that pretty much tells it all....

Maybe you should watch Gangs of New York. I'd tell you to check out the book but I don't think it has pictures in it.

He's still mad at Hawaii because Obama was born there and they produced a real birth certificate.

Plus a judge there blocked his Mooslim ban. He's still holding his breath over that, too.

We are talking about today and not stuff from the 1800's or any other time way in the past. TODAY is the topic and today Trump is trying to do what's best for America but thank you for the history lesson... At least no one here has yet to "truthfully" deny they ever said it or thought it about the countries Trump referred to. Or any other countries that fall under that umbrella today. Miracles never cease to amaze me.

That's not much of a comeback (although you so very much want it to be). Kinda laughable, actually.

No. Not "kinda"; it is.

And many of us probably have thought unkind thoughts about one Country or another sometime in our lives (up here,it's a national past-time to dis the US; hell, we invented Anti-Americanism in the late 1700s).

The difference between you and the rest of us, though, is that WE realize it's wrong and try to fix ourselves.

You double dip and then add sprinkles to it.
